Mental Health First Aid Training: People of African Backgrounds

Approximately 20% of Australian adults experience a common mental illness each year. There is anecdotal evidence that mental health problems are a growing issue within the African community. The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Course sought to develop skills of African-Australian community members to be able to support a friend, family member or co-worker developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis and make a real difference in their lives and in the community.

Twenty to (22) community members completed and acquired registration as Mental health First Aiders. This training program was delivered in partnership with North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network  (https://nwmphn.org.au/)
